Growing Excitement as 27th Laguna Phuket Triathlon Fast Approaches
Phuket’s World Famous Triathlon Returns Under a New Normal
The internationally-acclaimed Laguna Phuket Triathlon will take place as scheduled on Sunday 22 November 2020 at the award-winning destination resort Laguna Phuket. With over 650 confirmed entries so far, the event marks the 27thconsecutive year of the event known as “The Race of Legends”.
The signature race distance includes a 1.8Km swim, 50Km bike and 12Km run and sprint distance (0.5Km swim, 20Km bike and 6Km run). In stringent adherence with all the latest event safety standards, race organisers have redesigned the race setup to accommodation athletes with safe distancing criteria in mind, which includes a beach run finish and exciting new post-race afternoon party being held at Xana Beach Club.
This year Southeast Asia’s longest-running triathlon will feature the inaugural Laguna Phuket Duathlon (LPD). Crafted in a 4Km run – 50Km bike – 12Km run combination, the Duathlon will take place on the same day, giving all athletes the chance to experience the race’s signature bike course.
The 27th Laguna Phuket Triathlon (LPT) will feature a crowd of exciting elite athletes from the domestic triathlon community including Thai and selected international athletes based in Thailand. Leading the Thai male elite athletes will be Phuket born Jaray Jearanai, who has won the Thai male division of the LPT for the last 9 consecutive years. Krzysztof Hadas of Poland, may be regarded as the overall favorite in the male division, having finished in 3rd place at last year’s LPT.
In the female division, Pareeya Somsen is expected to lead the Thai female challenge, after her runner up finish at the 2019 Subic Bay South East Asian Games (Duathlon). Lindsay Nickel of the USA, who recently won 3rd place in 2020 Ironman 70.3 Bangsaen, is currently the fastest Thailand based female triathlete and will be expected to strongly challenge for the LPT this year. The event will also feature amateur enthusiasts including Thai celebrity triathlete Yossavadee “Yo” Hassadeevichit.
The world famous event is being held for the first time under new normal operations, with every aspect adhering to stringent public health and safety regulations. Organizers are confident the enhancements to operations and limited number of athletes will have a positive impact on the overall event experience.
